Meet the owner: Hashtag Burgers and Waffles
Have you ever wanted to know more about the owners who started the restaurants you visit regularly?
To answer some of the burning questions we have for restaurants on the Deliveroo platform, we’ll be interviewing restaurant owners to learn about the inspiration, challenges and joys that comes with owning their restaurant.
Today, we’re excited to introduce Matthew from Hashtag Burgers and Waffles in Brisbane! Find out more about his passion for helping others, his plans for the future, and his favourite item on the menu…
What was your inspiration for starting Hashtag Burgers and Waffles?
I’ve always been in the restaurant industry, it’s been my life and passion! My main goal was to open a restaurant where I was able to help people and give back to the community. Hashtag started out with the idea of helping women experiencing domestic violence, which is why we partnered with Rizeup! Through this platform we donate $1 from EVERY burger sold and assist them in rehousing those who are suffering from domestic violence.
When did you start Hashtag Burgers and Waffles? How many locations do you have?
We started on 29th March 2019, and this is our first location. We plan on opening another kitchen and a fixed premise by mid next year!
What does an average day look like for you?
At this point we are only open weekends which gives us great flexibility. Our day consists of prep, music, laughter, making burgers and trying to change the world!
What is the most challenging part about being a restaurant owner?
The long days and trying not to eat too many burgers or waffles!
What is your favourite thing about being a restaurant owner?
The people we meet and being able to help!
Bonus: what is your favourite item on the menu?
I’d have to say the Hot Shot, a moist lean beef patty burger with cheese, onions, jallops, lettuce, and sweet chilli mayo – add some onion rings to that little guy and OMG!!!
