Minimum proof of identity requirements

All applicants must provide four documents against the following categories

ONE of the following documents will be accepted.

Here are the most commonly submitted documents:

  • Australian Visa, Current At Time Of Entry To Australia As A Resident Or Tourist
  • Full Australian Birth Certificate (Not An Extract Or A Birth Card)
  • Current Australian Passport (Not Expired)

    The following documents are also accepted:
  • Immicard Issued By Immigration And Border Protection That Enables The Cardholder To Prove Their Visa And/Or Migration Status And Enroll In Services
  • Certificate Of Identity Issued By Foreign Affairs And Trade To Refugees And Non-Australian Citizens For Entry To Australia
  • Document Of Identity Issued By Foreign Affairs And Trade To Australian Citizens Or Persons Who Have The Nationality Of A Commonwealth Country For Travel                Purposes
  • Certificate Of Evidence Of Resident Status
  • A Document For Travel To Australia (Up To 5 Years From The Date Of Issue On The Accompanying Visa)


ONE of the following documents will be accepted.

  • Current Australian Drivers Licence, Learner Permit Or Provisional Licence Issued By A State Or Territory, Showing A Signature And/Or Photo And The Same Name          As Claimed
  • Current Passport Issued By A Country Other Than Australia With A Valid Entry Stamp Or Visa
  • Current Proof Of Age Or Photo Identity Card Issued By An Australian Government Agency In The Name Of The Applicant, With A Signature And Photo^

The following documents are also accepted:

  • Australian Marriage Certificate Issued By A State Or Territory (Church Or Celebrant-issued Certificates Are Not Accepted)
  • Current Shooters Or Firearms Licence Showing A Signature And Photo (Not Minor Or Junior Permit Or Licence)

^Current Proof Of Age Or Photo Identity Card

Must be Issued By An Australian Government Agency In The Name Of The Applicant, With A Signature And Photo.

This could include:

  • Driver License
  • Australian Passport
  • Immicard
  • Any other government/issued ‘photo card’ that satisfy the above conditions. Note that a identity document can only be used once. E.g. A passport can be               used as a primary ID if it is not already being used in the commencement category.


TWO of the following documents will need to be provided.

Here are the most commonly submitted documents:

  • Australian Secondary Student Photo Identity Document
  • Private Health Care Card
  • Bank Card/Credit Card Issued By Australian Or Foreign Banks (Must Be From Separate Financial Institutions If Providing More Than One, Bank Statements Are             Not Accepted)
  • Medicare Card
  • Foreign Government Issued Documents (For Example, Drivers Licence)
  • Working With Children Check

The following documents are also accepted:

  • Credit Reference Check
  • Photo Identity Card Issued By The Australian Government Or A State Or Territory Government
  • Evidence Of Right To An Australian Government Benefit (Centrelink Or Veterans’ Affairs)
  • Enrolment With The Australian Electoral Commission
  • Australian Tertiary Student Photo Identity Document
  • Official Academic Transcript From An Australian University
  • Aviation Security Identification Card
  • Maritime Security Identification Card
  • Photo Identity Card Issued To An Officer By A Police Force
  • Photo Identity Card Issued By The Australian Defence Force
  • Security Guard Or Crowd Control Photo Licence
  • Certificate Of Identity Issued By Foreign Affairs And Trade
  • Document Of Identity Issued By Foreign Affairs And Trade
  • Convention Travel Document Secondary (United Nations) Issued By Foreign Affairs And Trade
  • Consular Photo Identity Card Issued By Foreign Affairs And Trade
  • Trusted Referees Report˚
  • Australian State Or Territory Fishing Licence

˚Trusted Referees Report

  • A letter/ declaration from a trusted source, such as a General Practitioner, a pharmacist, or a principal of the applicant’s school.
  • A Verification of applicant identity by an authorised referee form, completed by a trusted referee.

    A trusted referee must:
  • Know the applicant
  • Meet the ACIC’s authorised referee requirements (outlined in the form)
  • Complete the required sections in the special provisions form, including a declaration
  • Provide, if requested, a written reference confirming the applicant’s identity on a company/ organisation letterhead



Document Requirements

Please note that documents must include evidence of the applicant’s full name, date of birth and a passport-style photograph where necessary and must be certified by a person listed in Schedule 2 of the Statutory Declarations Regulations 1993 (Cth).

Change of name

If the applicant provides identity documents using a former name, they must provide evidence of a name change.

We are able to accept:

  • a change of name certificate issued by the Australian Registry of Births,                 Deaths and Marriages
  • an Australian marriage certificate issued by a state or territory (church or              celebrant-issued certificates are not accepted)
  • a Deed Poll
  • a foreign marriage certificate

In the case where the applicant has had multiple previous names, we can accept the applicant’s father’s surname (in the full marriage certificate) as a link to the applicant’s maiden name. 

Translated documents

If an identity document is provided in a language other than English, you must obtain an accredited translation form the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters.

VEVO

We can accept a Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) printout as a record of current visa status (an alternative to a visa document whenever required).
